Hello. Do You…Breathe?

Do you breathe?

When I ask this question to folks around me, they think I’m nuts – to be accurate, more nuts than they were convinced I already was.

Well, of course we breathe, they say. How do you think we are alive?

Sure, we all breathe. But do we…breathe?

There I go again.

Seriously, I ask this annoyingly many times, because it appears that most of the time we do not breathe well enough.

Next time you are around a small child or a baby that is sleeping, watch it carefully. You will see the kid breathing deep and heavy while asleep. Now, watch an adult while he/she is asleep. What you will observe is very shallow breathing.

You will surely agree that deep breathing is much better than shallow breathing.

So why are adult bodies not breathing deep. It appears that, as we grow, owing to a number of physical and psychological factors, we forget deep breathing and do more of the shallow stuff.

As a result, all our important body parts – heart, lungs, liver, brain… – get much less oxygen than they deserve.

More oxygen going to our vital parts is one of the simplest ways to make sure each of these parts is more healthy and young.

So you see, just deep breathing alone can ensure that you live longer, younger and healthier.

Funny, right? Who would have thought!

Sure, we cannot do deep breathing all the time. But how about doing it just 5 times a day, about 3 minutes each time?

Sounds easy right? Of course, it is easy.

And it gives you loads of benefits.

This is what you need to do:

  • When you have 2-3 minutes free time any time of the day (except right after a heavy meal or when you are really tired), sit in a calm place.
  • Take a deep, slow breath through your nostrils, to a count of 5. Make sure you breathe such that you can feel oxygen travelling to all parts of your body, and your abdomen actually expanding.
  • After the inhalation, wait for a moment and start exhaling it through YOUR MOUTH, this time more slowly than you inhaled.
  • The whole process should take about 15 seconds max. Repeat this 10 times.

That’s it. Do the above 4-5 times a day.

Within a week, you will start feeling the difference.

You would have started breathing!
